Rep. Shapiro May Jump into CT-04 Race

The Stamford Advocate reports:

State Democrats have received several inquiries from people who want to run against Shays. Shays beat former Westport First Selectwoman Diane Farrell last year and is the only Republican congressman in New England.

State Rep. James Shapiro, D-Stamford, and Jim Himes, Greenwich Democratic Town Committee chairman, have shown interest in running for the congressional seat.

“I am considering it, and I have had conversations with a number of people within the party, but I have made no decision,” Shapiro said. “It’s still very early in the process.” (Ginocchio)

Maura over at MLN has much more:

Jim Shapiro hung out with a small group of bloggers on Wednesday night up at the Capitol, where we were treated to a tour and enjoyed some great conversations in the Democratic caucus room and later at a local pub. Jim and I spoke at length about the race in the 4th, and while I know he is still in the decision making process, I’m enthusiastic about the depth of talent here in the 4th. I can forgive Shapiro from having Westhill rather than Stamford High as an alma mater (thought Black Knights still rule, my friend) and I am really impressed with Shapiro’s commitment to affordable housing and civil liberties issues. Like Jim Himes, Jim Shapiro also has an appreciation for the potential for blogs to invigorate “small d” democracy and bring more people into the democratic process.

I also had a chance to talk with Shapiro during the blogger tour (more on that later) and I found him to be interesting, engaging and knowledgeable. This could set up a very interesting primary next year.

  1. Not at all impressed with Shapiro. We can and need to do much better. If Shapiro was as interested in invigorating democracy as he is in his suits he wouldn’t have been such a piss ant on no brainer issues like public financing. I think Shays actually may be a tad more liberal than Shapiro as well…

  2. Robin,
Could you explain more about Shapiro’s record on campaign finance reform, and why you consider him to be a conservative?

  3. Does anyone know if Jim Shapiro is still a card-carrying member of the DLC?

Earlier in the year, Dodd’s campaign confirmed that Senator Dodd is no longer a member. That leaves Lieberman, Malloy, Larson? (someone needs to ask about this), Hartford Mayor Eddie Perez, and potentially Shapiro as the only CT officials belonging to Al From’s DINO-sauric organization.

If Shapiro has moved on, I’ll give him a good listen. But if he still supports the DLC agenda, forgeddabout him.

  4. Well, I have heard it from none other then Representative Shapiro himself that he has quit the DLC. That base ebing covered, I am, as suggested, all ears.

  5. Genghis Conn

Interesting. That organization seems to be sinking fast.
