“I do not believe their voice reflects the majority of the people of Connecticut. However, I am also firmly convinced that attempts to reverse this decision — either legislatively or by amending the state Constitution — will not meet with success. I will therefore abide by the ruling.”
–Gov. Jodi Rell
This historic ruling will provide additional security and protections to thousands of loving, committed same-sex couples and their children living in Connecticut. The plaintiffs, advocates, and above all the people of Connecticut should celebrate this civil rights victory. We look forward do implementing the Supreme Courts decision in a bi-partisan manner.
–Senate President Donald Williams
“The court has just usurped democracy in Connecticut and redefined marriage by judicial force.”
–Peter Wolfgang, director of FIC
And now we’ll see a very strong attempt by FIC and other social conservative groups to make this November’s ballot question of whether or not to have a constitutional convention turn into a referendum on this ruling.
My suspicion is that most people in Connecticut aren’t going to care one way or the other. A small minority will be outraged. Another will be overjoyed. But for most people, this won’t change their lives or affect them in any way. That, right there, is a sign of progress.
