Dodd FISA Update

Apparently, Senator Dodd didn’t take kindly to reports that Harry Reid would bring the FISA bill to the floor despite Dodd’s hold. Dodd promises to filibuster the FISA bill if the hold doesn’t hold. So to speak.

Here is the email I received.

Here is Dodd on the bill in his own words:

I need your help. I’m asking you to join me in this effort. If you care about our Constitution, if you understand that our rights ought not to be eroded – Sandra Day O’Connor said it right: Because we made this choice about war, it doesn’t give the President a blank check to go out and rip apart our Constitution. That’s what I’m standing for, I hope you’ll join me in that effort.

  1. How can they focus on these issues when great public questions – such as whether Congress will declare the mass-murder of Armenians by Turks of the Ottoman Empire prior to WWI a genocide – still hang in the balance?

Which would mean that Democratic leadership doesn’t hold Chris Dodd in any higher regard than most anyone else does.

  3. While I agree with many that warrantless wiretapping of US citizens is unconstitutional, I don’ t know that corporate lawyers are the individuals we want deciding constitutionality issues. Holding corporations responsible for determining the legality of gray area government directives seems inappropriate , may unnecessary delay appropriate law enforcement, and would increase consumer costs.
