Shays Money Used for Gambling?

This story keeps getting worse. Not only may have a longtime employee of Rep. Chris Shays stolen money from his boss, he may have used it to gamble, say several state Republicans. If that’s true, he must have been racking up some massive debts. He makes over $100,000/year.

A grand jury has been empaneled to investigate the matter, and has called on Michael Sohn to testify. Sohn is due back in the U.S. December 26th–he’s currently on his honeymoon in Bhutan. …I’m sure he’s coming back, too.

My heart goes out to Chris Shays. The poor guy lost a close election, and now finds out that money he could have used for his campaign was stolen by a man he apparently trusted a great deal.

We’ll see what the grand jury turns up–and what happens when and if Michael Sohn returns to the United States.

  1. Just some additional info, Bhutan has no US extradition treaty or embassy.

Good to know Sohn has another two weeks to indulge his champagne tastes. And I love the irony whereby Shays loses, is literally flat broke, and yet Sohn gets to use campaign cash for a three-week honeymoon in Asia.

Hey, maybe Sohn was just mad at Shays for piously refusing to go negative, and decided, “heck, if the election is a lost cause, why not grab a little campaign dough.”

I bet Sohn’s newlywed wife comes back without him, and Sohn seeks asylum in a monastery. Can you get an annulment under the circumstances?

  3. Real Classy, Scooper….you managed to throw Sohn, Shays and now his newlywed wife under the bus. You are sooo witty. Get a life….

  4. Relax Rooster. It’s both politics and a soap opera.

According to your heartfelt logic, we should close our eyes to the Blagojevich train-wreck, and/or feel sorry for him?

Actually, Blue, you read it wrong. There should be certain boundaries in everything in life, including politics. People in the “public sphere” are always fair game. But when you include innocents — like “newlywed wives” — it seems a bit shady, no…..”soap opera” or not.

So…according to your heatfelt logic….everyone is open to be ridiculed and slandered.

  6. And why does “TrueBlueCT” and “AndersonScooper” have the same gravatar picture? Are you two people or one person trying to pose as two?

  7. Aw crap RR, posting from a friend’s computer again.

And I’m not ridiculing Sohn’s wife, although the fact of the honeymoon makes the storyline that much more poignant.

Mrs. Sohn is in a heck of a predicament, and of course I feel sorry for her.
