Hartford Councilman Segarra Makes a Move – UPDATED

Ken Krayeske reports from Hartford:

Assuming that Eddie Perez does not survive the remainder of his term, City Councilman Pedro Segarra will in all likelihood be the next mayor of Hartford, according to Councilmen Pedro Segarra, Ken Kennedy and Matt Ritter.

A resolution is circulating this afternoon for a special meeting to install Segarra as Council President, which is the position that ascends to the mayor’s seat should Perez resign, and thereby removing Perez ally Calixto Torres from the council presidency, Segarra said.

Will Perez serve the remainder of his term? It’s impossible to say right now. The Hartford city council does have the power to impeach the mayor, but as Krayeske points out it may take special permission from the legislature–where Perez does have allies.

Segarra has indication that if he becomes mayor, he wouldn’t run in a subsequent election.

Update 1/31, 11:00am: The Courant now has a story in which current council president Calixto Torres has vowed to stay in his position. Torres had originally agreed to step down. Interestingly, Torres’ statement came from the mayor’s spokeswoman.

Now it’ll come down to who has more votes.

  1. He’ll serve the rest of his term unless he’s impeached.

  2. Wasn’t he under investigation before his election and the people still voted for him. The people of Htfd have spoken. Elections have consequences now Hftd must live with thug they elected mayor

  3. Fantastic article by Ken K. It’s almost unbelievable to read how much he got them to admit. If you read between the lines these guys are basically saying “for the good of the city we’ll cut a deal so two of us can run for mayor and the other guy can be mayor whie we get ready to do that, so everyone wins”. Sounds like people are thinking a lot more about themselves than the city- which seems to be the problem in general.

Also, in the history of political power plays or coups has this ever happened and worked? I don’t think Brutus went to the town crier first and made sure everyone knew the plan. I doubt the pirate guy tom cruise just played got on the radio and told the German people what the plan was to get rid of Hitler.

I’m sure this sort of stuff happens all the time, but by telling everyone? It really doesn’t come across as transparent, it comes across as selfish and slimy.

  4. Also, just read this http://www.courant.com/community/news/hfd/hc-webcal0131jan31,0,4281860.story,

I feel bad for Torres. It has to suck to be accused of being guilty in the court of public opinion. Guilty by association, no charges, no facts, just public accusations (assuming what he says in the referenced letter is true and there really is no proof nor evidence).

This whole situation gets sadder and sadder each time I read an article.

He would probably be able to get a lot done after such a pledge.

It certainly worked for Sam Caligiuri in Waterbury when he wound up acting mayor there.

When Democrats say things like, “…Caligiuri’s the most honest, ethical man I’ve ever met….” – about a Republican, it’s clear Sam did something right.

Hartford could use a man like that right about now.

One tip; work with and listen to, Rev. Cornell Lewis & Republican Mike McGarry; a couple of guys with Hartford’s best interest at heart.

I can see Ken Kennedy running, but it seems like Matt Ritter has bigger and better things (on the state level) in his future.
