No-Excuse Absentee Ballot Amendment Moves Forward

The Government Administration and Elections committee today approved a proposed constitutional amendment that would allow voters to request an absentee ballot without having to provide a reason. Right now, voters can only request an absentee ballot if they will be out of town on election day, or have a disability or illness that prevents them from coming to the polls.

The amendment was approved 14-1. Now it goes on to the whole General Assembly, where, in order to make it on to the 2010 ballot, it needs to be approved by a two-thirds majority.

  1. I watched part of that discussion today. Sound idea that should help people exercise their right and responsibility to vote. I hope it gets the support it needs.

  2. They forgot to leave out that you can get an absentee ballot for dead relatives, your dog, cat and hamster. You don’t even have to put your real name on these any more because no one gives two sh —!You can put
Tony Romo down if you want. Oops, I forgot that’s been tried already.
You can also just call up Dodd’s favorite branch of Government ACORN, and they will fill the ballot out for you. Especially if English isn’t your first language. What a bunch of nonsense. We have become a lazy society!

I confess to being the main idea person for this. I met with the GAE chair…furnished him material a few monthss ago and plead its case. I am glad to see this pass the committee.

    Bruce,

While you are busy patting yourself on the back for furnishing the chair info ‘months’ ago…

This is the fourth year this concept has been introduced. And the first introducer was a Republican, so I don’t think his ‘main idea person’ was you.
