Dodd: Administraton is to Blame

CNN:

Dodd, a Democrat, told CNN’s Dana Bash and Wolf Blitzer that Obama administration officials pushed for the language to an amendment designed to limit bonuses and “golden parachutes” at those companies.

“The administration had expressed reservations,” Dodd said. “They asked for modifications. The alternative was losing the amendment entirely.”

The administration, according to Dodd, was concerned that they would face numerous lawsuits if the language protecting those bonuses wasn’t added.

Originally Dodd had said he didn’t know how the language protecting bonuses was added.

  1. From the Courant:

After Dodd’s segment was over, Blitzer continued with a live report in which he said that Dodd was “coming forward with a vastly different story” on Wednesday than he had told to a CNN employee on Tuesday.

“It’s very embarrassing to Senator Dodd to say one thing yesterday and another thing today,” Blitzer said.

Yup. And turning on the administration isn’t good, either. He’ll never be ambassador to Ireland now!

  3. Here is the video of CNN taking on Dodd Dodd. Doesn’t look good for the Senator.

  4. I guess Fox News and Rush Limbaugh were ::gasp:: RIGHT.

Something smells of burning Irish peat and Scotch. I think it’s Chris Dodd’s ass on fire.

  5. I guess Fox News …..[was]::gasp:: RIGHT.

Interestingly the Clinton’s came to the same conclusion.

While the moveon (etc. & et all) Kool Aid drinkers loathe it, they actually *are* fair & balanced in their NEWS converage.

NO one, certainly not Fox, has ever claimed their non-news programming was.

  6. Maybe he turned on the administration over the whole Ireland question because President Obama named Dan Rooney the Ambassador to Ireland yesterday?

  7. Maybe he turned on the administration over the whole Ireland question because President Obama named Dan Rooney the Ambassador to Ireland yesterday?

Or maybe — just maybe — he’s a lying turdsack who is finally getting his just desserts.

  8. Let me get this straight: the President and his people have been whining about these loopholes for the last week, but they were the ones responsible for protecting the bonuses in the stimulus language? Seriously?

Can we really believe a word they say?

    NO!
    Certs is a candy mint!

    Hey…wait a minute kids…….you’re both right!

Dodd’s both a lying [insert your own favorite expletives here] who’s also :

That someone other than himself was chosen as the new Ambassador to Ireland.
(Which certainly would’ve given him a well timed and graceful exit.)

  10. The Republicans are going to force Dodd out and open the door for Dick Blumenthal or Chris Murphy. Dodd is possibly mortally wounded and just got some wretched numbers in a Q-Poll. It seems like common sense to just sit back and let him squirm.

  11. Not to throw fuel on the fire but I think Sam Stein seems to have the most accurate take on what happened: http://www.huffingtonpost.com/2009/03/18/dodd-treasury-officials-i_n_176609.html.

Also, not sure if you guys follow his twitter, but he put out a statement after the CNN interview: “Please take a look at my statement on the Executive Compensation Amendment http://dodd.senate.gov/?q=node/4853.”

  12. Senate Banking committee Chairman Christopher Dodd told CNN Wednesday that he was responsible for language added to the federal stimulus bill to make sure that already-existing contracts for bonuses at companies receiving federal bailout money were honored.

Dodd acknowledged his role in the change after a Treasury Department official told CNN the administration pushed for the language.

Both Dodd and the official, who asked not to be named, said it was because administration officials were afraid the government would face numerous lawsuits without the new language.

On Tuesday, Dodd denied to CNN that he had anything to do with adding the language, which has been used by officials at bailed-out insurance giant AIG to justify paying millions of dollars in bonuses to executives after receiving federal money.

The man is a liar, plain and simple, and the Administration isn’t far behind.

Is it just me or does it sound like the Treasury Department and Geithner hung Dodd out to dry on this one? seems like kind of a dick move on this one. Demanding that Dodd add this provision and then let it hang around his neck when people start pointing fingers.

The problem isn’t the language, it’s that Dodd indicated that he had no idea where it came from yesterday.
