A Thankless Task

Rep. John Larson (D-1st district) has a pretty tough job right now: defending Nancy Pelosi. Larson said on MSNBC today that Democrats aren’t considering a change in leadership:

“The Democratic Caucus stands firmly behind Nancy Pelosi, as does Steny Hoyer stand with her,” House Democratic Caucus Chairman John Larson (D-Conn.) said during an appearance on MSNBC.

When asked if there would be any change in the Democratic leadership over Pelosi’s accusations that the CIA misled Congress in intelligence briefings, Larson said, “No. None whatsoever.”

Pelosi has been in hot water lately over just how much she knew about the Bush administration’s use of torture. There have been a few calls here and there, mostly from Republicans, for her to resign. That seems very unlikely, but still it’s good form for the man who may succeed her one day to go on television and offer a robust defense.

  1. Larson has the safest seat in Connecticut. He could defend anyone – even Murtha, the ear mark king — and come away without a scratch.

  2. And, of course, Pelosi’s polls are way down. One story suggest she may be the Newt Gingrich of the Democrat Party: “The CNN/Opinion Research Corp. survey released this afternoon found that the approval of how Pelosi is doing her job as speaker has dropped from 51 percent in January to 46 percent in March to 39 percent now.”

  3. Larson’s district is so awash in the fetid Democratic backwater of the state he could carry water for Hitler and survive an election so long as he has a D next to his name.

He’s swabbing both Pelosi’s rump as well as Dodd’s and it probably won’t hurt him at all. Everyone digs the gap-toothed plasticine put-on Kennedy airs he attempts to affect… his district eats that garbage wholesale without so much as a belch of indigestion.

Upon Barrack’s election, I only half facetiously suggested that Pelosi should be replaced as a gesture to getting away from the ‘business as usual attitude’ prevalent in Washington, and to put some of the past Congressional rancor behind us.

Nothing has happened since the election to ease my apprehension. More interested in promoting her own agenda tha supporting her President, Pelosi has become a thorn in our sides. An example of her negative impact is right here in that her conduct is now a tool to attack John Larson.

It is time for Pelosi to go.

I agree, she is a liability. Hoyer would be an able Speaker and Larson would move up in the leadership. She should be ousted, someone has to have the nerve to make the first move.

Maybe someone can get her to try this.

That may be her best option. CIA will not take this laying down, they will do what they need to do. They severely weakened Bush, they’d have no problem taking out the Speaker.
