I think that any person who lets a website go live using a free template from their web-hosting server for US Senate where they would be joining an already crowded field of challengers for a primary likes being talked about and having his ego stroked.

  2. Paid for and approved by…

It’s day 16 since his poll went into the field, when is he registering his committee?

So happy ill have a non war-mongering, actual fiscal conservative to support who didn’t vote for the wars or the Patriot Act !!! 🙂

and even though I was poking fun at Simmons right there, that criticism strangely matches up to Dodd too….ahhh arent our parties so different in their convictions? mmmm career politicians, cant get enough of em.

Sam, I checked the FEC website, and their candidate site suggests the $$$ for that poll was completely legal.

Also, someone should tell Peter Schiff that the CFL party line is available. I’m sure Peter could pull in whatever percent they need to keep the line available for 2012, I’m guessing Mertens and Schiff could get along just fine, and in a three way race, who knows, maybe Schiff pulls off the unthinkable.

But for him to think he can somehow win the GOP nomination? It’s impossible Peter. Impossible.

If you pay for a poll yourself to see where you stand in a hypothetical matchup, do you need to form a campaign committee for that?

If you raise or spend over $5000 to do it, yes — you are required to do it within 15 days.

Samuel, what you’re alleging simply is not true.

At this point Schiff has done nothing to indicate that he’s doing anything more than “testing the waters”. The reasonable expenditures for a preliminary poll, even that website, do not make him an official candidate.

However, the http://www.schiffforsenate.com is probably a mistake, and borders on a violation.

Read the first pages of the guide. It’s fairly clear as to what is what.

  8. One of the problems for Schiff (and any GOP candidate) is reconciling the seeming irreconcilable:

Paying for war and reducing spending

Ron Paul was largely in lockstep with the party on every domestic issue (at the time, the Fed was a non-issue, except to my fearless leader!) – guns, Roe, spending, taxes, etc.

If Schiff follows (IMO) a logical approach to fiscal conservatism, then he must be anti-war. And that remains the catch-22 of any R primary.

I’ve heard from some local Republicans who blasted Ron Paul back during the primaries… and those same Rs are now saying he’s the only one who makes sense… but RP never broke 10% anywhere that was contested. And I don’t see Schiff doing that much better… marginally yes, but even if that numbered doubled (which I don’t believe it has), then you’re at 20% in a four way race.

  9. Theoretically, if the Paulistas were extremely well organized, they may be able to engineer a coup and get many of the seats at the convention… perhaps even 50%. But that’s next to impossible. Many / most seats go to town committee members… and if the Chairs caught wind of such a thing… they would go way out of their way to fill those seats with anyone BUT a Paulista.

In fairness to my crew though… we are a truly dedicated bunch. So I’m not saying it’s impossible… just not realistically gonna happen.

  10. GC… stop the moderation!!! What could be wrong with that comment?! Maybe the use of the word “Paulista!” I bet Echelon picked it up and now I’m on a watch list! haha.

  11. Let’s not get ahead of ourselves. Paying for the war? Obama is the President and he has given no plausible explanation for how he will pay for health care or climate change. So to ask a man who hasn’t declared for a primary how he will pay for the war is a bit premature.

On the other hand, Ethan says it all — the site name gives a strong sense he may run.

My question is: does this gentleman have a constituency? Often newcomers with money make a big splash in the media, but they haven’t given much thought to what has to be done to go out and actually gain votes.

  12. Let’s not get ahead of ourselves. Paying for the war? Obama is the President and he has given no plausible explanation for how he will pay for health care or climate change.

That’s a joke, right? Or is that claim something you really believe?

Just wanted to check before I spelled out Obama’s positions on these things, assuming that maybe you’re just being provocative.

  13. From the perspective of presenting a message, Ron Paul (and presumably Schiff) have an extremely simple message:

“We spend a trillion dollars per year on our overseas empire… at the same time our bridges are crumbling at home.”

But when you say that, you get hit with “you hate America!”

I think Schiff would be perfectly comfortable saying we’re broke and probably chuckle when someone suggests he “hates America.” But that won’t necessarily go over well within the context of a GOP primary.

  14. As for Obama and war… David Obey hasn’t been particularly fond of Obama’s plans. Why?

  15. stupid moderation!!!

    See 2004 Presidential Race.

  17. Bristol… I’ve been a Paulista for at least a decade. Scoop may call me a kook, but at least I’m consistent! (Or at least I try to be!)

That’s really too bad, I was honestly starting to like you but not anymore.
