If Rell Is Out, Fedele Is In

Lt. Governor Mike Fedele said today that if Gov. Jodi Rell decides not to run for re-election, he will run for Governor:

“If Governor Rell decides not to do it, I will be the Republican candidate in 2010,” Fedele, who grew up in and still lives in Stamford, said Wednesday.

The surprisingly candid statement from the Lt. Governor is seen as a line in the sand by some observers, including Dean Pagani:

Fedele may have felt it necessary to make his intentions known, because House Minority Leader Larry Cafero has formed an exploratory committee for an un-specified statewide office and Senate Republican leader John McKinney hinted at a possible statewide run last week as he bowed out of the race for congress in the fourth district.

It will be very interesting to see how this turns out.

  1. …and in other unimportant news the House/Senate R’s are releasing another pointless budget today.

    Make it stop.

  2. What does the Lt. Governor do, besides bang a gavel when the Senate’s in session? Is he really qualified for governor?

But hey, if he can clear the Republican field, more power to him… Go Dems 2010!

  3. Carcharodon Carcharias

Wow bold/arrogant statement from Fedele. Maybe he knows something we don’t but from my seat it seems that if Rell doesn’t run there could be plenty of candidates who are far more exciting than the Liutenant Governor.

  4. Is he really qualified for governor?

    Immigrant; self-made millionaire.

He’s exactly the caliber person that should be running the state.

Much like 1980’s CT Republican rock-star Dick Bozzuto; Fedele’s own life’s story is the very ratification of not only the work of the early settlers and Founders; but of everything that’s right about America.

  5. could be plenty of candidates who are far more exciting than the Liutenant Governor.

Only two others worth looking at – and they both have Italian surnames too.

  6. Thanks to the Obama administration, any Republican will beat any Democrat in 2010.

  7. pufnstuf,

Really? How much would you like to bet that at the end of election night 2010, not every Democrat will lose?

  8. Really? How much would you like to bet that at the end of election night 2010, not every Democrat will lose?

Well of course not every Democrat; heck we like some of them!

  9. And how ’bout this gem from Fedele:
    —-
Advocate: Fedele said he is not planning to launch an exploratory committee in case Rell backs out.

“I’m not concerned about the financial side of it,” he said.
    —-
I guess I wouldn’t be concerned with the financial side of campaigning either if I spent over a grand on my suits, drove a Ferrari, had a couple of little getaway homes in CA and Italy. I give him a ton of credit, though…he’s a self-made man and a real nice guy. But he’s a political lightweight in Hartford who couldn’t defeat Andrew McDonald for an open state senate seat in a gubernatorial year when Rowland won by 12 points (and won handily in Stamford btw).

He should be concerned with the financial side of it: his boss, the most popular Governor in America, has had impotent fundraising and is finding that raising $250,000 is very difficult when you can take no more than $100 per person—-and ‘everyone loves Jodi’ right?

  10. Candidate Fidele = Governor Bysiewicz

  11. I’m sure if Jodi decided not to run and Lt. Gov Fedele was campaigning, he could get 2,500 people to donate $100 fairly quickly. No serious candidate from either party should have a difficult time crossing that hurdle once they really try.

  12. Really? How much would you like to bet that at the end of election night 2010, not every Democrat will lose?

BD, I know you get the point I was making.

  13. …and in other unimportant news the House/Senate R’s are releasing another pointless budget today.

I’d imagine in the scheme of where the state is today regarding an adopted budget, that’s anything but pointless. Nice try tho….

When are we going to get the details in a separate thread?

  14. Perhaps Gov Rell has looked at the 2010-11 , 2011-2012 disaster we are facing and wants no part of it.

  15. Stupid Question – What has any of these people done to be chosen – beyond bootlicking ?? I know it sounds trite but none of these people have developed or run a government project to success – real success – they just have existed in an artificial world and sort themselves out by boucing up and down hoping to be noticed.

Curious…..Not a stupid question but I would think if we can make Obama President, what qualifications should anybody need to be a Governor?

Will be curious to see if candidates who lack political experience start citing Obama as a sort of precedent that they don’t require traditional experience.

  18. This seems like a really interesting move. I’m just musing here, but could Governor Rell’s decision to trade ideologue for pragmatist on taxes and Fedele’s rather sudden statement here be related somehow? It seems to me that Rell’s retirement seems at least a bit more likely now than it did before her shift on taxes.

  19. The banter about the potential candidates and their potential fortunes is fun –
    but the money question is
    WILL RELL RUN?

I bet not. She will not in any way be able to stomach the clean-up of the mess she will leave . If this year looks like an economic bad dream come true – 2011 will be a nightmare.
Her party has lost faith in her after she’s departed from the reservation a few too many times. Governor Moody hasn’t got the energy to last much past next May – end of short session.
Business needs someone who has a clue that economic development is a bit deeper than movie credits and stay-cations.
She has lost the veto block – more to come next year
If she wants to leave as a governor popular in Q polls – she doesn’t serve another term – or part of a term – the governing by news release trick is spent. People are looking for a vision, plan and solutions – definitely not tricks she has mastered.

There are too many people actively announcing, campaigning or hinting about the possibility they’ll run before grandma guv has backed out “officially” – a tell tale sign the money bet is on an early retirement. She can take more trips to the empty Florida crib, and to the rockies to visit with the grand kids who have been suffering since their mom had to switch from Pepperidge Farm croutons to generic Safeway croutons… and maybe have more time to tool around on the other kids seadoos at the lake house.

My money says her announcement comes at Halloween – an appropriate time to break in the lame duck costume – and let the candidate wannabes get “quacking”on the campaign trail… so to speak.

  20. Candidate Fidele = Governor Bysiewicz

    Dream on.

Under the microscope of a gubernatorial race someone’s bound to get a video of the SOS in an unguarded moment when she’s acting like herself.

    She flunked charm school.
Thirty seconds of the truth on youtube and she wouldn’t be able to hold her current seat, or get elected to office in the local PTA either.

Ask anyone who served with her in the assembly; anyone either party.

She got her nickname the old fashioned way – she earned it.

  21. She got her nickname the old fashioned way – she earned it.

Of course I had to bing this.

Nice nickname. Sounds like it comes from an Austen Powers movie.

  22. This is simply a warning shot for Sen. McKinney, Rep. Cafero, et al — Fedele is making it clear that he is (a) not running for the CD4 House seat, and (b) which seat it is he wants. It essentially is telling John McKinney that he isn’t the only Republican who’s watching Jodi closely.
