Candidate Survey

CTLP is proud to offer its first general candidate survey. The survey is open to all candidates and slates of candidates running for municipal office this November.

It is not a long survey, just four questions. The answers to all surveys will be posted on the CT Elections Wiki, where they will be publicly available and easily found by major search engines. We’ll also post some of the more interesting responses here on the site.

If you are a candidate or are a part of a slate of candidates, all you have to do is answer the four questions and email them to me at chris@ctlocalpolitics.net. You can also post the responses to the survey in the comments section of this post.

Here’s the quick, simple survey:

Name(s):
Party:
Office(s) sought:
Town:

1. What do you think are the most important issues facing your town?

2. If elected, what would be your highest priorities for the next 2 years?

3. How is your approach to town government different from your opponent(s)?

4. Why do you want to be elected to town government?

—————–

The idea is for us to create a searchable database of candidate responses on the wiki site. The responses will help to focus our coverage of the various town races.

Thanks for participating! I’m hoping to get responses from each and every town holding an election this November.

  1. Name: John R. McCommas
    Party: Republican

Office sought: Windham Board of Selectman (Willimantic Service District)

    Town: Windham

    1. What do you think are the most important issues facing your town?

Tax Relief — The incumbents (both the Democrats and the rejected RINOs running under the “Bottom Line” banner) have jacked up taxes and jacked up taxes and jacked up taxes some more. We are broke and businesses are leaving the town and the state in droves. It time to rein in spending. I will oppose any tax increase at all and I will work very hard to CUT TAXES. With so many issues looming like a potential state takeover of our school system I can’t promise outright tax cut in the short term but I will try very hard to get one the first year. Certainly in the long term I can promise tax relief if we get a Republican majority.

Senior citizen property tax freeze – One of the first things Republicans if elected are going to do is pass an ordinance which will freeze taxes for senior citizens at current levels. We have all been hurting under liberal Democrat First Selectman Michael Paulhus’ and the even more liberal (with other people’s money) Board of Ed Chairman Ken Folan’s annual whopper tax increases, but our senior citizens living on fixed incomes are the most hurt of all.

I think they deserve a break and I am going to give it to them. Once in place even if we eventually lose our majority it will be very hard politically, I hope, for the Democrats to take that away from them.

Ethics – Paulhus has stacked the Ethics Board with his cronies. I will fight to make the board the independent watch dog it is supposed to be.

    2. If elected, what would be your highest priorities for the next 2 years?

Spending reform, tax relief, a new charter commission (to get rid of the Finance Board) and Ethics Reform.

    3. How is your approach to town government different from your opponent(s)?

I am not a spendaholic. They are. I will not increase taxes – they will.

    4. Why do you want to be elected to town government?

Frankly because I am pissed off. These people have ignored the interests of those they are supposed to be representing for far too long. All they care about is catering to special interests. I will look after the taxpayer’s interests – not the special interests.

I will email this to the address you provided as well.

  2. Thanks, John. I’ll put it up on the wiki.
